Submerge.
‘Submerge’ forms part of Thalassophobia, a personal exhibition Kristi presented in 2019 about fear - the introduction to her fear - the fear of the ocean – a metaphor for her life and a subject she will keep referencing to because it resonates deep within her. She envy's it and the things that dwell beneath it. Kristi feels vulnerable and anxious around it and so by painting it she achieve a sense of control and peace over it.
We often gain perspective about what lies ahead of us when we take a step back or remove ourselves completely from the situation. That situation for her, the ocean/the person, can be both beautiful, yet terrifying. It represents her journey of heartbreak, discovery, and loss.
With this series, Kristi explored with oil paint to create the richness of the deep blue sea from an aerial perspective. 3D textured rock formations float around as islands or galaxy ways. It's expansive, mind clearing and allows the viewer to see the world for what it is.
This series is one where Kristi redevelops its style and shows her journey of learning and exploration as an artist.
